How do you become an F1 race marshall?
You know, those men in orange suits pushing the stricken Toro Rossos and Williams out of harms way or waving those blue flags at the Spykers and Hondas. What training is required, and who do you call to apply for a job? Shards of carbon fibre on the track? No worries, I’ll get out there with my broom stick and sweep them off while dodging the Ferraris and McLarens coming at me at 200mph! An Aguri on fire? Quick, get the fire extinguisher! A McLaren rear wing on the track? Can I keep it as a souvenir, Mr Dennis? I suppose I won’t have to pay to get into the circuit? I think I would like this job….
Go to your local track, and talk to an official. Not an F1 official, you need to start at the lower levels of racing. Depending on where you are at, a good start may be a local dirt track. Plan on working there for a few years. Make contacts. Get trained in new areas whenever you can. Work your way up from there.
It’s like any other sport in the world. You are not going to start at the top unless you know someone, and if you are asking here, you simply don’t know the right person.
Hey, even if you are a big fish in your local pond of a course after a few years, you are still better than where you are now.
Just start small. Shoot, tell them you are looking to volunteer. Hey, even if the spot is normally a paid spot, but they have all the slots filled, tell them you would like to volunteer and learn so that you can get a spot later on. Pretty much any track will put someone to work who will work for free.
