Generally speaking, which ever system was based on newer technology. This generally means the newer console, or the more expensive console of each generation will be the more advanced.
For the 5th generation consoles, the N64 had the most advanced graphics capabilities on paper (featuring a 93.75 MHz NEC VR4300 CPU, paired with a Silicon Graphics 62.5 MHz 64-bit RCP GPU)… HOWEVER, their limited cart ROM capacity (compared to CD ROM) resultes in many games having limited textures and few full-motion videos, so one can fairly argue aesthetics in favor for the PSX or Saturn, despite both having much lower polygon counts and fewer rending effects.
For the 6th generation, the Xbox has the most advanced graphics capabilities, without question. It coupled a 733 MHz x86 Mobile Celeron processor with a 233 MHz Custom Nvidia NV2A GPU with a fill rate of 932 megapixels/sec, no matter texture layer (around 30 million triangles/sec), capable of multi-pass rendering and 2 vertex shaders for enhanced graphics. On paper, the PS2 and Gamecube were comparable in graphical capabilities, each with their strengths and weaknesses that seemed to even each other out, but by and large later-generation PS2 games (due to the more evolved and robust 1st and 3rd party development platforms) tended to look better.
Fairchild Channel F vs. Atari MVS 2600… The 2600 was a year newer, and capable of more colors and higher resolution.
NES vs. Sega Master System – The Master System was graphically more robust, capable of 32 simultaneous colors available (16 for sprites, 16 for background) from a palette of 64 (can also show 64 simultaneous colors using programming tricks) at with similar numbers/sizes of of sprites at similar resolutions with less “flickering”. However, Nintendo had more 3rd party support, and eventually gave rise to games with additional DSPs extending the graphic capabilites, where Master System development didn’t advance as much.
Genesis vs. SNES – SNES… No contest. Better graphical capabilities in all areas. The one thing Genesis had over SNES was a faster CPU clock speed, allowing for faster scrolling and fewer sprite-flickering problems. Same applies for Sega CD vs. SNES.
Lynx vs. Game Gear – Lynx. Better graphics engine thanks to custom 16-bit “Suzy” and math co-processor.
GBC vs. NES – GBC had a larger color palatte, faster CPU and capable of more on-screen sprites but was limited by its fixed lower resolution with no TV out.
Cosmos vs. GB – No contest. Holographic LEDs vs. LCD sprites. To dissimilar to draw a fair comparison.
Gizmondo vs. Nokia N-Gage… Gizmondo has a faster ARM9 CPU with a nVidia GeForce 3D 4500 128-bit GPU.
