Americans were the driving force behind the formation of the UN. What is driving anti-UN feelings in the US?
I recall entities like the John Birch Society being a driving force of getting the US out of the UN…those days seem so long ago. What is driving this new wave of anti-UN sentiment?
Ignorance and fear, mostly. There are many people in the United States who are simply not smart enough to understand the world as it exists today, and they think that if only America isolates itself, everything will be OK. They are wrong, of course, but they’re not smart enough to recognize that.
The founding fathers were aware of international law, and the early courts of the United States recognized international law in decisions that implicated it. We live in an interconnected world, people, and we can’t turn our back on the main mechanism for peaceful resolution of international disputes. Is the UN perfect? No. Is it a threat to America’s independence? No.
